Tips for Your Roanoke Island Vacation This Summer

Tips for Your Roanoke Island Vacation This Summer

Roanoke Island is known for being the first English Colony in the New World and has long been a popular tourist destination in the summer months.

Though the island is an ideal vacation spot for history buffs, it also offers a variety of relaxing, entertaining and family-friendly options that make it a truly special place to visit.

Whether you are looking for a quiet getaway with your significant other or want to take your family on a fun and educational trip, Roanoke Island is the perfect choice.

Brush up on your history

The Island is home to several historical sites, but none are as popular as Roanoke Island Festival Park. This is a great attraction for history lovers as it allows you to experience the first English Colony in the New World first hand.

The Settlement Site exhibit allows guests to interact with costumed interpreters who will show you what day-to-day life was like. The park is also home to an adventure museum, Algonquian longhouse and the popular ship, ‘Elizabeth II’, a re-creation of an English merchant vessel from the original Roanoke Voyage.

If that isn’t enough, you can check out the popular local play, ‘The Lost Colony’, that gives you even more insight into the first settlement. The play runs through August 21 at the Waterside Theatre.

Check out family-friendly attractions

The Island is also home to the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island. Here, your children can get an up close and personal look at alligators and sharks, touch a stingray or learn about the conservation efforts being made in the Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation (STAR) Center.

Island Farm is another popular attraction for children, as it is another historical site that shows what it was like to live on the Island once it was more established in the mid-1800s. You and your children will get a first-hand look at what it was like grow crops for a community, cook meals on a hearth, raise animals and more.

Plan a few days for relaxation

With so many exciting attractions on the Island, it may feel like you never have a moment to sit and relax. We suggest setting a day or two aside where you can sleep in, read a good book, dine at one of the amazing restaurants or simply take a leisurely stroll around town.
