Read on to learn more about three of the area’s top attractions.

Exploring the WinterLights at Elizabethan Gardens

Widely considered one of the top attractions in the Outer Banks during the winter months, the WinterLights will get you into the holiday spirit with an incredible array of lights throughout the Elizabethan Gardens.

During this time of year, the 10-acre nature reserve is transformed into a lit-up wonderland that features festive trees, holiday displays, gift and plant shopping, a crackling open-air fire, live entertainment and more.

Hiking nearby trails

While the temperature may drop during this time of year, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your favorite outdoor activities such as hiking.

Many people even prefer to hike during the winter months for the views you can take in when the snow falls on trees and other terrain.

Two of the top hiking spots in the area include Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and Jockeys Ridge State Park.

Nags Head Woods Preserve is another popular hiking destination you’re sure to enjoy.

Touring the Wright Brother’s National Memorial

If history is more your thing, the Wright Brother’s National Memorial wintertime activity you’re sure  to enjoy. Just a short drive from the island in Kill Devil Hills, the memorial commemorates the Wright Brother’s first flight and allows visitors to tour the landscape of the infamous flight, including markers on the ground. There is also a visitor’s center and museum that feature reproductions of the 1902 glider and the famous 1903 flyer. A reproduction of the wind tunnel that the brothers used for testing before accomplishing flight is also housed here.
